For decades, whenever Sifri Eye Center has performed cataract surgery, we have used eye drops before and after cataract surgery to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection.
While eye drops generally work well, there are often problems associated with the side effects of the medications, as well as difficulties obtaining the drops from the pharmacy and placing them in the eye.
To make our surgery more convenient and to reduce costs (a complete set of brand-name drops can cost up to $400 per eye), we have begun using a new medication called Tri-Moxi, which is placed inside your eye at the time of surgery.
Studies have shown that this medication allows us to reduce drops after surgery about 95-percent of the time. A small number of patients may have breakthrough inflammation that requires an eye-drop regimen to be started.
The advantage of using this medication in surgery is that your postoperative course will be simplified - there is a 95-percent chance that you will only have to place one prescription eye drop in your eye per day.
This reduces the chance of side effects on your ocular surface and simplifies the postoperative course by not dealing with the inconvenience and expense of obtaining and placing excessive drops onto your eye.
If you have arthritis and have difficulty administering drops, getting dropless cataract surgery is especially beneficial.
As with all medications, even Tri-Moxi has side effects. These include the presence of floaters, which may appear cloud-like, as well as a blurred vision during the immediate postoperative period. The doctor will evaluate you and determine the best approach.
Cataract surgery is the most common surgery in the United States with over three million procedures performed annually. A cataract is the clouding of the natural clear lens in the eye, resulting in hazy vision, unusual glare, poor night vision, and a reduction in color perception. During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed, and then replaced with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

I have been coming to this office for many years. I trust Dr. Sifri with my eyes. He is so caring and very concern about his patients. If he sees something that is not quite right, he will do another x-ray to make sure everything is okay. Dr. Sifri will explain everything if he sees any issues he will explain what course we need to take to correct the problem. His staff is very friendly, and always ready to answer any questions you may have. I don't feel as if I was rushed and I feel good knowing I have a doctor that I can trust to keep my eyes healthy.
